November 23, 2008 - Tournament report, Release Event, Kryptonite Kollectibles in Janesville, WI
Went out to Kryptonite Kollectibles in Janesville, WI for their WOW Minis release
event. Not a bad drive from the NW Chicago burbs were I live. They have a nice store
and good game play area. It was a bit of a bummer that only 3 people showed up for the
tournament but still a good time. We played sealed single booster select 2 of the 3 to
play with. This seemed to work ok considering some of the negative reports about this
format. The pack I opened contained:
Chen Stormstout, Scroll of Strength, Care for a Pint
Boulderfist Warrior, Breakthrough, Boulder Toss
Rethilgore, Quick Reflexes, Lycanthropy
I decided to play with Chen and Rethilgore. With both of them having 2 tick attacks I
figured they would play fast. Also Lycanthropy looked good. One of the other
players pulled a High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind so I would have that to deal with. I
played the other player first who used a Paladin and a Mage. We played on the Tanaris
map that has a spot in the middle where you can be adjacent to both VP spots. That
looked good to me and since I went first I moved Chen right into that spot. This may
have been a mistake as it set my opponent up to block access to his mage with his Paladin
and the terrain. So I ended up attacking the Paladin and Chen took a beating from the
mage. I believe Chen went down before the Paladin but they both went down about the
same time. Rethilgore made quick work of the Mage after that. I can’t remember exactly
what happened after that but I believe I got the rest of the VPs I needed to win from the
VP spots on the board. I know there were a few rolls during the game that were in my
favor. One mage attack in particular only got 3 hits out of 7 or 8 dice.
My second match I faced the High Priestess and a warrior. My plan was to go
straight for the Priestess but I ended up attacking the warrior some first. Seemed like a
waste to spend 1 tick to do nothing when I could spend 2 and get a swing in. Eventually I
did get to attacking the Priestess and once I did she went down very fast with her 1
armor. Chen went down about the same time as the Priestess but I was able to kill the
Warrior before he killed Rethilgore. With a few VPs from the map I won the game. I
think the rolls were a little in my favor for this game but not as much as the first game. I
do believe my opponent could have done a better job of keeping me away from the
Priestess.
Overall the +1 armor, resist, attack, and move during ticks 6 to 10 is very nice. I
really like Rethilgore after playing him. For only 5 honor you get a 2 ticks for 5 dice
attack, 3 armor, 3 resist, 8 health and move +1 half of the time. The other half of the time
he is not much worse. Chen is decent but not really that impressive for a legendary. 2
ticks for 5 dice is solid and 2 armor, 2 resist, 10 health is OK. The chi counter crit ability
is nice and definitely helped out some. Might be better if he is with characters that have
higher dice attacks. His heal 2 for 2 ticks action bar card "Care for a Pint" looks good but
when it comes to using it you are usually deciding between healing 2 or attacking.
Attacking almost always seems better and I only used the heal once.
So for my first WOW Minis tournament it was a fun time. Thanks to JP for
running a fun event and to the guys who played (sorry I don’t remember names).
